14A: Mastery Skills Demo

Instructions

Designing in the real world

Many employers ask applicants or new employees to demonstrate their skills under time constraints. This demo will prepare you for that experience and help you assess your ability to make quick decisions, navigate the software, and report back in a short amount of time.

Important: This assignment is due on Wednesday at 11:59pm MDST. We cannot accept late work, so be sure you submit the .zip file several minutes early to avoid getting a zero.

Scenario

You are an employee at 360 Design Boutique and you’ve been given a new client called “Monarch Mountain Resort.” The client needs a direct mail postcard created for his business. He gives you the design on page 107 of the Visual FOCUS textbook and tells you that a former employee created this flier and then left the company. He loves the flier, though, and wants you to use it as inspiration for the direct mail postcard design. He specifically likes the colors and the flowing nature of the design. He also informs you that he can’t find a copy of the logo, so he needs you to recreate the logo for use in the design.

Billable Hours:

It is important to do high-quality work. However, if you spend too much time on a project, 360 Design Boutique will be unhappy with your work due to the higher cost. Working quickly and tracking your time spent designing is an important part of working in the design world. You will not be graded on how long you spend on this design, but keep track of the time you spend and report it in the comments. It is recommended that this project take around 4 hours to complete.

Instructions:

• Locate the flier titled “Monarch Mountain Resort” on page 107 of your Visual FOCUS textbook.
• Take a screenshot of the flier so you can use it as your guide.
• Use any of the tools in Illustrator to recreate the logo for Monarch Mountain Resort. The live trace tool is NOT permitted. Do your best to pick a typeface that is close to the original. Online tools such as “What the Font” and “Identifont” may help you.
• Using any program(s) you wish, design both sides of a 4in by 6in (at 300ppi) postcard. Arrange both sides on an 8.5 by 11 inch document. Use the flier as INSPIRATION ONLY. Do not copy it exactly.
• The content included in the postcard is your choice, but you must include the following contact information on the postcard:

Monarch Mountain Resort
444 Lakewood Ave.
Moutainland, CA 93371
670-224-0254
monarchmountainresort@gmail.com
monarchmountainresort.com

• You MUST recreate the logo and include the provided contact information on the postcard, but everything else – including color scheme, placement, content, images, other design elements – is up you. DO NOT simply copy the flier. Use it as inspiration only. The postcard must advertise the Monarch Mountain Resort.
• Remember to practice good file management techniques. Create a project folder named “MasteryDemoFirstnameLastname” and save everything there.
• When you have recreated the logo and created an effective direct mail postcard for “Monarch Mountain Resort,” package your project folder, zip it, and submit it here to I-Learn.
• Report the time you spent designing in the comments.

Good luck!
